Paper Carpet
While visitors’ attention were mostly drawn to architectural features from eye-level or above such as pillars and stained glasses, most tended to overlook the surface they stood on. Inspired by the swirling patterns and vivid colours of red and yellow from the carpet next to the North Nave Aisle, Paper Carpet was created to respond as well to celebrate decorations and the architectural features of St. Mary le Wigford Church. With shades of red, orange and brown, the colours harmonized with the stained glass windows and historical characteristics of the surrounding, complementing the mood of the environment. As to encourage viewers' interaction and participation, the Paper Carpet was installed at the entrance of the church to be compulsory for visitors to walk across. The process of observing and visitors’ action may be considered as a form of performance, which opened up more possibilities in terms of duration and responses.
